The Dubai Water Canal did not exist a decade ago. Between 2013 and 2016, contractors cut 3.2 kilometres of waterway through Business Bay, Al Safa and Jumeirah, extending Dubai Creek to the Arabian Gulf and sealing the ground between them into an island. The channel opened on 9 November 2016. It measures roughly 80 to 120 metres across and six metres deep — dredged to that draught so vessels can pass beneath the road crossings above it.
